Sunflowers
Every spring, I am so excited to be back outside and working in the dirt, and this year is no different. Over the last few weeks, we have been especially grateful for our farm and the opportunities it affords us to get outside and enjoy nature while staying safe and isolated during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Earlier this month, we kicked-off our outdoor gardening season by planting one of our sunflower fields for early summer photos. I had big plans of building a template to help with planting our sunflower field, but time got away from us and before I knew it April was here! Fortunately I had an extra set of hands helping with our the planting. Our little munchkin was right in on the action, planting seeds, covering them with dirt, and supervising our work!
We will continue planting sunflowers every 7-10 days through mid-summer for a continuous harvest of sunflowers this growing season as there are a few ways we are planning to use them throughout the season.
Outdoor Photo Sessions
This fall we will be offering sunflower photo sessions again! This first sunflower planting is trialing a new variety we think will work very well for fall photos. This first planting will bloom starting in early June and allow us to see how they will work for photos and enable us to make any adjustments to our planting scheme for this fall’s sessions. Once the blooms start to fade, we will replant the field so it will be ready come September for sunflower sessions.
Bouquet Subscriptions
If you sign up for a lavender bouquet subscription, you will likely find some sunflower blooms in your bouquet on any given week! We have 5 different varieties we will be growing throughout the summer, and we are looking forward to finding ways to incorporate them into our bouquets.
uPick Bouquets
Throughout the summer we are hoping to host several uPick events where people can come and harvest their own flower bouquets straight from the flower fields! In addition to having several varieties of sunflowers available, we are also growing a number of other flowers including: aster, cosmos, gomphrena, and zinnias. Private uPick events can also be held on the farm for groups of 5 or more.
