Why We Grow Lavender
One of the first questions people ask us when they learn that we are lavender farmers is “why are you growing lavender and what do you do with it?” It’s a fair question. Five years ago I would never have considered planting 300+ lavender bushes, but here we are.
Our business grew out of our desire to live life as naturally as possible and avoid chemicals and medication when able. We wanted to grow and raise our own food and learn how to use plants medicinally. In parallel, I was also trying to learn everything I could about being a cut flower farmer. I don’t know about you, but a vase of flowers on my kitchen table brings a smile to my face every time I see it, and I loved the idea of looking out my back window to a field of flowers in bloom.
My husband and I brought these ideas together, and we decided to try our hand at growing lavender. The more we looked into growing lavender, the more we realized how useful lavender is as both a flower and an herb!
Lavender is one of the best herbs for relaxing after a busy day at work, running errands, or managing a full house;
lavender can be used both fresh and dry, making it extremely versatile;
lavender is an herb, related to rosemary, so culinary uses abound (given that you grow the correct type of lavender);
lavender has a wonderful aroma. The smell when standing near the lavender field is priceless;
and last but not least, lavender is PURPLE, which all my family and friends know is my favorite color. Lavender also comes in several other exciting colors though, including white, pink, and blue.
