Fall Farm Update

The weather is beginning to cool down, and on the farm we are switching over to our fall tasks. The flower garden has a few dahlias and other flowers sending up blooms still, but for the most part our growing season has come to an end.

It was a busy summer and start to the fall. We had four great uPick lavender events in June, and welcomed many people to the farm for outdoor photos and private uPicks from our cutting garden. We also offered no-contact bouquet deliveries throughout the growing season. In the midst of all of this, we also welcomed our 2nd child in mid-July!

With our growing season coming to an end, we started working on property improvements and preparing new flower beds for next season. Past the creek we are getting ready to plant 1/4 acre of sunflowers next summer and add over 1300 new lavender plants, which is almost triple what is currently planted in the fields. The sunflower fields will be ready next summer for pictures and events, and the lavender will be ready for harvest and photos June 2022.

Since it is a bit of a hike to get to the new flower fields from our current parking area, we are also regrading the gravel road and doing some water run-off management to prevent heavy rains from washing out sections of the road and causing major ruts. This will allow cars to drive down and park at the creek. It will also make for a much shorter and nicer walk to the new flower fields!

Over the next few weeks, the kids and I will slowly start clearing out the summer annuals from our cutting garden. After all the beds are cleared, I am going to try my hand at sowing a cover crop to help replenish the soil over the winter in preparation for plantings next spring. I have started planning out our garden for next year already too.

Additionally, as the weather starts to get cooler, we will get back into making our soaps and lotions. I just restocked on all the supplies for our lavender bath and beauty products and will be spending a few days over the next month making and packaging these items so they will be ready for the upcoming holiday season!

We are thrilled with the changes that are taking place on the farm right now, and we can’t wait to share them with everyone next year!
